The Tar Barrels of Ottery St Mary

November 2026, Across Ottery

For a dose of high-octane British eccentricity, the Tar Barrels of Ottery St Mary is your ultimate November destination. Every November 5th (unless it's a Sunday), this Devon town ignites as locals shoulder flaming, tar-soaked barrels and sprint through narrow, packed streets.

The Spectacle

The fire begins early. Junior barrels kick off around 4:00 PM, offering a slightly calmer introduction to the chaos. The intensity ramps up from 7:00 PM with the adult barrels, culminating in the massive Midnight Barrel in the town square. It is an adrenaline-fueled tradition where "Ottregians" carry the heat to celebrate the town's history.

Visitor Survival Tips

  • Dress Down: Wear old clothes made of natural fibers (wool or denim). Sparks fly, and synthetic "puffer" jackets melt instantly.
  • Hold Your Ground: When a barrel approaches, do not run. Running causes crowd surges; simply lean back and let the runner pass.
  • Safety First: Due to heat and smoke, this event is unsuitable for small children, dogs, or those with limited mobility.

Logistics

Roads close by 4:00 PM. Use official peripheral car parks and bring cash for the fairground and food; mobile signals—and card machines—frequently fail in the 15,000-strong crowd.

Remember: if it is flaming and moving toward you, it has the right of way!
